A Peek Into “A Pinch of Cinnamon and Lore”
When Dragon Soul Press opened submissions for two charity anthologies, one horror and the other fantasy, I knew I wanted to take part. At first, I only planned on writing a story for the horror one, Infernal Delights, which I wrote all about in this blog post. I’ve never been a huge fan of dragons, and since that’s the theme of Dragon Flight, I didn’t think the anthology would be a fit for me. Then, I thought, you know what? I want to push myself to write a story with dragons. On top of that, I decided to make my story a cozy fantasy. Since I tend to prefer darker fiction, this also forced me to step outside my comfort zone. I’m so glad I accepted the challenge because “A Pinch of Cinnamon and Lore” is one of my favorite short stories I’ve written.
So, what is my first ever young adult cozy fantasy story about?
When Fiamma is about to wrap up her day of work at the Flickering Wick, the candle shop in Valle Fortunata, her pet dragon, Aiden, soars through the open window with an order form. Fiamma expects the request to be for vanilla candles, since the scent is good luck in the valley. Instead, someone named Ashmere wants to place an order for a dozen cinnamon candles. Fiamma panics because cinnamon is believed to bring the Jinxed Rain that showers the valley in bad luck for a century. Before Fiamma can decide what to do, Aiden blows fire on the parchment and burns it to a pile of ashes. Having no proof of Ashmere’s request, Fiamma tells the only Fortunatans who won’t suspect she’s attempting to perform dark magic, her best friends, Dashiell and Pepper. Since Aiden brought the request to the candle shop, he leads Fiamma and her friends to the place where he got it, deep in the forest of Ember Pines. Is Ashmere really trying to summon the Jinxed Rain? Or will Fiamma be left questioning her valley’s lore? At an isolated cabin in the forest, Fiamma meets Ashmere and discovers the truth.
An Amazon Best Seller
When I found out Dragon Flight hit number one on the Amazon best sellers list for fantasy short stories, I couldn’t believe it. I never thought I would be included in a best-selling anthology.

Opening My Copy of Dragon Flight
The anthology was published on January 23, and I received my copy a couple days later on January 25. Since this was my first time opening my copy of a best-selling anthology, I filmed my most entertaining unboxing video yet.
